PERU — The town garage on Peru Center Road was reported to be fully engulfed by fire and fire crews were contending with explosions from inside the building late Thursday night.
The call came in around 11:30 p.m., and early reports were that the garage at 85 Peru Center Road was fully ablaze and that the structure was collapsing. At least two explosions were reported as the building burned.
Peru firefighters quickly called for help from departments in nearby towns, including Mexico and Dixfield. They were also requesting tankers be sent to the scene as the blaze was being battled.
It was not immediately clear what was inside the two-bay garage or if anybody was at work there when it went up in flames. The building that burned is home to the Town of Peru Road Department.
The building sits a short distance from a two-story home, although there were no reports that the flames were spreading.
By midnight, crews were battling the blaze with extra manpower and equipment being sent to the scene. There were no immediate reports of injury.
