Established businesses and promising new ventures near the intersection of Lisbon Street and East Avenue in Lewiston have been struggling for years. Meanwhile, the need for affordable senior housing that is convenient to essential services has been increasing.

There is an easy solution to both problems.  Lewiston Housing Authority should be allowed to renew its plans to repurpose the now-closed Martel School at that location for senior housing. It is next door to a supermarket, across the street from a pharmacy and a bank, and within easy walking distance of restaurants, take-outs, and other stores — all of which could benefit greatly from increased clientele. It is also on a bus line.

The Lewiston Planning Board plans to meet at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 13, at City Hall to discuss the Martel School property. We must support this very practical solution that benefits all of us.
