MAPLE GROVE, Minn. — The Maine Gladiators finished pool play at the USA Hockey’s Tier II 18U 2A national tournament with a 4-2 victory over the Clearwater Ice Storm Blue on Saturday.
Wesley Clements, an Edward Little graduate, gave Maine a 1-0 lead in the first period.
Brunswick’s Zachary Sterns-Hayes increased the Auburn-based Gladiators’ advantage to 2-0 midway through the second period. Nicholas Pelletier of Lewiston, who played at North Yarmouth Academy, had the lone assist on the tally.
Jonathan Prince got Florida-based Clearwater on the board with under 10 minutes remaining in the third.
Maine responded with a pair of goals, the first by Fryeburg’s Owen Galligan, which was assisted by St. Dom’s senior Miles Frenette. Edward Little senior Campbell Cassidy scored with 1:10 remaining in the third period for a 4-1 advantage.
Jaden Meeke scored with under a minute remaining for Clearwater.
Goalie Aidan Farion stopped 17 shots for the Gladiators, while Connor Sheridan made 34 saves for the Ice Storm.
The Gladiators advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face the Nashville Jr. Predators on Sunday at 2:15 p.m. The winner of that game moves on to the semifinals later in the day. The championship game is Monday.
