GORHAM — Oxford Hills graduate Lauren Merrill pitched a complete-game shutout in the opener of a nonconference college softball doubleheader and her University of Southern Maine squad went on to sweep the twinbill against University of Maine at Farmington on Thursday.
Merrill allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out nine across seven innings in the 2-0 victory.
Kendall Migliorini singled in the first run in the third — she also collected a double in the game — and Makena Mulcahy’s base hit in the fourth drove in the other Huskies run. Fellow Oxford Hills grad Madison Day doubled for the Huskies.
Carleigh Schievink scattered 10 hits in the circle for the Beavers. Christa Allen and Mackenzie Dyer had the hits for UMaine-Farmington.
Southern Maine (9-13) cruised to a 9-1 victory in the second game.
Buckfield grad Hannah Shields singled home two runs in a six-run first inning for the Huskies.
Maddie Pike homered in the fourth to provide the Beavers (1-15) with their lone run.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
THOMAS 18, UMF 8: May Larochelle and Sage Brown each scored four goals in the Terriers’ (2-7) victory against the Beavers (0-8) in Waterville.
Larochelle had two assists and Brown had one. Anna Chadwick had a hat trick. Oxford Hills grad Molly Littlefield, Samantha Snow and Lauren Barlett all had a goal and an assist. Scarlett Raymond-Aye and St. Dom’s grad Emily Wallingford also scored for Thomas.
Kaya Back potted three goals for UMF while Ruby McMinis had a pair of goals. Ashlee Farrar, Emma Bourget and Abby Trefsger also scored.
Lizzy Gotay made eight saves for Thomas and Kate Norwell stopped 10 shots for the Beavers.
