POLAND — Adam Gwarjanski tossed a no-hitter and was supported by a big first inning as Poland defeated Lewiston 16-1 in a five-inning baseball contest Wednesday.

Gwarjanski allowed one run in a wild, but hitless, top of the first inning, then the Knights plated 10 runs in their half of the first.

Gwarjanski settled in and shut down Lewiston during the ensuing four innings to earn his second win of the season.

Sam Paladino and Travis West paced the Poland offense with two hits and four RBIs apiece. Each had a double, as did Drew Sayler.

MORSE 11, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 3: Caleb Harvey and Gavin Baillargeon had two hits apiece as the Shipbuilders won their season opener in Bath.

Harvey drove in three runs, and Baillargeon, Oscar Nelson and Braylon Williams drove in two apiece. Baillargeon, Nelson and Jackson Murray combined to throw a four-hitter.

Jake Maschino drove in two runs for Gray-New Gloucester (0-2).

SOFTBALL
POLAND 15, LEWISTON 14: The Knights (2-0) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win a back-and-forth tilt with the Blue Devils (0-1) in Poland.

With Lewiston leading 14-13, Poland’s Maggie McGlauflin led off the seventh and reached on an error, which allowed her to also take second base. She went to third on a passed ball during Emma Martin’s at-bat. Martin walked and was replaced by pinch runner Faith Bustamante. Alyssa Hart hit the ball to second and an error allowed McGlauflin and Bustamante to score the tying and game-winning runs.

The Knights led 5-1 after the second inning. The Blue Devils evened the score with four runs in the third and added five in the fourth to go up 10-5. Poland responded with eight in the bottom of the fourth to take a 13-10 lead, then Lewiston plated two in the fifth and two in the sixth to take the 14-13 lead.

McGlauflin continued her hot start to the season by going 4 for 4 at the plate for the second time in two games. She also drove in two runs. Nicole Rioux tripled and drove in a team-best three runs. Olivia Rioux tripled and had two RBIs, and Khloe O’Leary doubled and drove in two runs.

Knights pitcher Gretchyn Paradis went the distance, striking out six in seven innings. Lewiston’s Ava Dionne struck out four in 6 1/3 innings.

Dionne also had two hits and drove in two runs for the Blue Devils’ offense. Reese Maynard had four singles and an RBI, Elissa Nadeau finished with two hits and an RBI and Jersey Cunningham singled twice.

MORSE 6, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 1: Camdyn Johnson allowed one hit and struck out 13 batters as the Shipbuilders (1-0) won their season opener over the Patriots (0-2) in Bath.

Michaela Pettersen had a hit and two steals for Morse, while teammate Jasmyne Cary scored two runs. Catcher Sophia Barber threw out a base runner who was attempting to steal second.
