RUMFORD — Winthrop survived a challenge from Mountain Valley to earn a 4-3 road win in an MVC baseball contest Saturday.

Jake New gave the Falcons (0-5) the first lead of the game when he singled on a full count and drove in a run in the bottom of the second inning, but the Ramblers (4-1) answered in the top of third with three runs, all on a bases-loaded double by Tyler Shumway.

Shumway went 3 for 4 and drove in all four of Winthrop’s runs. Brayden Stubbert had a pair of hits and scored one run, while Jaxon August scored twice and Matt Beck hit a triple.

Winthrop added another run in the fifth. The Falcons fought until the end, plating two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but their rally ended with the tying run on first base.

Bradley Sirois scored twice and New once for Mountain Valley.

Winthrop sophomore pitcher Trent Collin earned the win in relief. He entered the game in the third inning and struck out six while allowing only one hit over five innings. Shumway pitched the first two innings, giving up one hit and one run and striking out five.

Sophomore Tyler Warren made a quality start for the Falcons, finishing with five strikeouts and allowing four runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Jake New relieved Warren and got the final out of the seventh inning, inducing a bases-loaded groundout.

MONMOUTH 12, LISBON 2: Three big innings carried the Mustangs (4-1) to a key MVC win over the Greyhounds (2-1) in Lisbon.

Monmouth scored all of its runs in three innings: five in the second, three in the fourth and four in the seventh.

Isaac Oliveira and Hunter Frost each drove in two runs for the Mustangs. Seven of the team’s nine batters had hits, led by Sam Calder’s two singles and doubles by Matt Maquis and Manny Calder. All but one Monmouth hitter scored a run — Kyle Palleschi, Sam Calder, Marquis and Brandon Smith scored two apiece.

Sam Calder earned the win by striking out seven and allowing four hits and no walks over 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Oliveira fanned three in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

SPRUCE SWEEPS OAK HILL: Leah Burgess’ three-run double in the sixth gave the Phoenix (5-1) their first lead of the second game, and they went on to secure a doubleheader sweep of the Raiders (1-3) in Jay.

Spruce Mountain won the opener 7-5 and took the second game 7-6.

Oak Hill, bolstered by a three-run first and two-run fifth, carried a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning of the second game before the Phoenix finally overtook the Raiders on Burgess’ big hit.

Aubrey McElhaney sparked the Raiders’ offense with an RBI double in a three-run first inning.

Jaydn Pingree paced the Phoenix offense with three hits.

Freshman Rylee Turner pitched all seven innings for Spruce Mountain. She struck out seven and allowed six runs on six hits.

Oak Hill freshman Izzy Whitaker also went the distance, fanning four and surrendering seven runs on eight hits.

The Phoenix, who were playing on their home field but were the road team in the first game and the home team in the second, built a lead that reached 7-2 in the first game. They first got on the scoreboard when Jazmine Pingree singled home a pair of runs in the first inning. She finished with a team-high two hits.

The Phoenix added three more runs in the fourth inning. Jaydn Pingree, Burgess and Turner each had an RBI.

The Raiders rallied back to within two runs on an RBI double by Saryn Blais and a run-scoring single by Whitaker in the fourth, and a sacrifice RBI by Kelsey Young in the bottom of the seventh.
