The Ogress and The Orphans by Kelly Barnhill is a magical story about a once lovely town struck by tragedy, a kind Ogress, and a rowdy group of orphans. After the library burns down, the townspeople slowly hole up in their houses and forget what it means to be a good neighbor.

The Ogress, who is new to the town, tries to show kindness to her neighbors by bringing them food and baked sweets. However, when one of the orphans goes missing, the townspeople point their fingers at the Ogress.

The orphans, who recognize the Ogress’ kindness and know she is innocent, have to work together to clear her name, and maybe along the way, bring kindness back to the town.

This book tells a fantastical tale about ogres, talking crows, and dragons, while also challenging the ideas of prejudice and reminding young readers how important it is to be kind to others.
