SALEM TOWNSHIP — Kaden Pillsbury had two hits and was one of four pitchers who combined on a three-hitter as fifth-seeded Mt. Abram downed Madison 9-1 in a Class C South baseball preliminary round game Tuesday.

The fifth-seeded Roadrunners advance to face No. 4 NYA/Waynflete (13-3) in the quarterfinals later this week.

One of Pillsbury’s hits was a double. He also pitched a scoreless sixth as the second reliever out of the bullpen.

Payton Mitchell started for the Roadrunners (13-4) and pitched the first 2 2/3 innings before Logan Dube took over. Dube lasted through the end of the fifth before Pillsbury took over. Bryce Wilcox pitched the seventh. The quartet combined to strike out nine batters. The Roadrunners defense helped out by turning double plays in the first and fourth innings.

Bulldogs (4-12) starter Austin Hay (four innings) and reliever Matt Haley (two innings) combined to allow four hits for 12th-seeded Madison, which committed nine errors in the field.

Mt. Abram took a 1-0 lead in the first and stretched the advantage to 7-0 after two innings. Madison scored its run in the top of the third and the Roadrunners countered with one in the bottom half of the inning. They plated their final run in the sixth.

LEAVITT 6, FREEPORT 3: An 11-hit performance helped the 10th-seeded Hornets earn a Class B South preliminary round win in Freeport and end the seventh-seeded Falcons’ streak of runs to the state final at three.

Leavitt (9-8) advances to face No. 2 Yarmouth (11-5) in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

While the offense was racking up hits, Hornets starter Noah Carpenter was holding Freeport (8-9) to three hits in five innings. Colten Taylor relieved Carpenter and pitched two hitless to earn a save.

After the Falcons evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Leavitt responded with a three-run fifth to take the lead for good. Freeport plated two in the bottom of the fifth, but the Hornets added one run in the sixth and another in the seventh.

Will Keach tripled and was one of three Leavitt batters with two hits, along with Taylor and Kade Knight.

Catcher Gus Hollen had two of Freeport’s hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs.

DIRIGO 11, MT. ABRAM 7: The sixth-seeded Cougars (10-7) scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a tie and beat the 11th-seeded Roadrunners (5-12) in a Class C South prelim in Dixfield.

Mt. Abram evened the game at 7-7 with six runs in the top of the fifth before Dirigo responded to put the game away.

Grace Robbins earned the win in the circle for the Cougars, striking out five in seven innings. She also had two hits at the plate.

Lana Waite, Kallie Errington and Emma MacFarlane each tallied two hits, as well, for Dirigo , which finished with nine. Errington and Jayce Brophy hit doubles.

Abi Wilcox had three hits to pace the Mt. Abram lineup, and Savannah Davis, Aiyana Savage and Jany Pepin each pitched in with two. Savage hit a double.

Adrianna Stinchfield struck out eight batters in six innings for the Roadrunners.

Dirigo will play at No. 3 Maranacook (13-3) in the C South quarterfinals later this week.
