ORONO — Eighth-seeded Edward Little scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to upset top-seeded Brewer 4-3 in a Class A North baseball quarterfinal Wednesday at the University of Maine’s Mahaney Diamond.

Campbell Cassidy scored the go-ahead run on an error. He then retired the Witches (14-3) in the bottom of the seventh as the Red Eddies (10-7) advance to face No. 4 Messalonskee in the semifinals on Saturday.

Edward Little tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh when Eli St. Laurent drove in Caleb Albert on a squeeze play.

Cassidy and Drew Smith each had two hits for Edward Little, which also plated a pair of runs in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2.

Smith pitched the first 4 1/3 innings for the Eddies. Cassidy relieved Smith and struck our four batters while holding the Witches scoreless over the final 2 2/3 innings to earn the win.

The Witches scored twice in the third on a two-run single by Rowan Valley and added another run in the fourth to go up 3-2.

Grady Vanidestine pitched a complete game for the Witches. He struck out three batters and allowed eight hits.

Edward Little’s victory is its third quarterfinal upset in as many seasons. The Red Eddies, as an eighth seed, took out top-seeded Oxford Hills 6-2 in the 2021 A North quarterfinals. Last year, they beat the No. 2 Vikings 11-6 in the quarters and as a seventh seed made a run to the regional final.

Edward Little has won seven of its past nine games. One of those victories was over Messalonskee, 3-1, on May 22. That was the teams’ only meeting in the regular season.

BIDDEFORD 18, OXFORD HILLS 5: Abby Bouffard tallied seven goals and two assists to lead the seventh-seeded Tigers (11-4) over the 10th-seeded Vikings (9-6) in a Class A prelim in Biddeford.

Cece Keller added four goals and two assists, Kylie Parent tallied three goals and an assist, and Nataliah Martinez made 10 saves for Biddeford.

Gracie Hart led Oxford Hills/St. Dominic with two goals. Mal Kennison, Ally Slicer and Bayleigh Young also scored.
