Howard E. Cooke

LEEDS – Mr. Howard E. Cooke, Jr., 75, passed away on Tuesday June 13, 2023, in Central Maine Medical Center. He is the loving husband of Joni B. (Briggs) Cooke with whom he shared 46 years of marriage.

Howard was born April 7, 1948, in Augusta. He is the son of the late Howard E. and Lorena J. (Coache) Cooke. He is a graduate of Winthrop High School Class of 1966. He went on to further his education at U Maine Orono where he received his associate degree in business.

Howard worked for the State of Maine Department of Public Safety as a Liquor Enforcement Officer for 33 years until his retirement in 2005. He previously worked as a dispatcher for the Maine State Police.

He treasured the time he spent with his loving family. Howard loved the Christmas season and decorating his home, competing with his neighbors. He was very involved with Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) and served on the committee of the Maine State Law Enforcement Memorial. Howard also enjoyed listening to the Statler Brothers and Johnny Cash.

In addition to his loving wife Joni, Howard is survived by his children Jonathan H. Cooke and his wife Belinda of Norway, Jenna Stewart and her husband Ryan of Augusta and Kevin Cooke and his wife Callie of Springfield, Tenn. He is also survived by his grandson Teagan Cooke; and his brothers and sisters in law enforcement.

Howard’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Prince of Peace Parish, 131 High Street, Sabattus on Monday June 19, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. There will be a gathering at the Church Hall following Mass to continue the celebration of Howard’s life. Interment will be in East Wales Cemetery.
