His collegiate swimming career has come to an end, but the accolades keep on coming for Bates College graduate Nathan Berry, whose accomplishments in both the pool and the classroom earned him the NESCAC nomination for the Division III Commissioners Association Men’s Sport Student-Athlete of the Year award.

According to a press release from the New England Small College Athletic Conference on Thursday, a committee of conference administrators selected Berry as the NESCAC’s representative.

Berry, an Augusta native, spent all four years on the Dean’s List and left Bates with a 3.86 GPA and a psychology degree, with a minor in digital and computational studies.

Bates’ team captain of the swimming and diving team earned other honors during his tenure, including Academic All-America, a two-time All-Academic honoree, the Bates Athletics Senior Scholar Award and the Richard V. Wagner Prize in Psychology award.

Outside the classroom, Berry collected the team’s Top Score Award after his junior and senior seasons. Berry set a meet record in the 100-yard backstroke and 50 backstroke events at the 2023 NESCAC Championships. He set an NCAA record with a time of 21.16 in the 50 backstroke, but the mark was later broken at the 2023 NCAA Championship meet. Berry’s Bates career came to a close with 10 All-America citations.

This is the second year the D3CA will be handing out men’s and women’s Student-Athlete of the Year awards. Hebron Academy grad Eliza Beaudin won the inaugural Women’s Sport Student-Athlete of the Year award following the end of her collegiate hockey career at Elmira College in 2022.
