ROXBURY — The town’s first historical society elected directors Monday and added three more members, bringing the total to 49 so far.
“We made history tonight,” organizer Howard Whitten announced after the meeting at the Town Office.
Directors of the Roxbury Community Historical Society are Roscoe Hodsdon, Bob Whyte, Anita Derouche, Tim Derouche and Whitten. Whitten and Tim Derouche will serve three-year terms, Whyte and Anita Deoruche two-year terms and Hodsdon a one-year term.
Directors elected Whitten as president, Tim Derouche as vice president, Anita Derouche as treasurer and Judy Whitten as secretary.
Whitten said the name Roxbury Community Historical Society was chosen to represent the four parts of the town: Frye, Horseshoe Valley, Roxbury Pond and Roxbury village. The organization is sharing space with the Roxbury Riders ATV Club on Route 17.
Residents at the town meeting in March approved raising $1,500 to get the society started and become a nonprofit organization, which is expected before falls.
Donations so far include a collection of boat motors from Whitten, town reports from the late 1800s to early 1900s, and 1970 to 2000, and a cancellation stamp of Roxbury from 1925 donated by the Byron Historical Society.

Yearly dues are $10 for singles and $15 for families. Lifetime membership is $100. To become a member, email Whitten at downwind@exfordnetworks.net.
