HANOVER — A man from Mexico was seriously injured Monday when the car he was driving went off the road, crashing into a guardrail before crossing the road and crashing into a tree on Main Street.

According to James Urquhart, chief deputy of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, police were called to Main Street at 4:36 p.m. Monday for a report of an accident. When deputies arrived, along with members of the Rumford Fire Department and Med-Care Ambulance, they found a vehicle off the road, with the front end crashed into a tree.

Jessie Coffin, 34, of Mexico was traveling eastbound on Main Street when he lost control of the vehicle, striking a guardrail, according to Urquhart, “subsequently crossing both lanes of traffic and going off the roadway and striking a large tree.”

Coffin suffered serious injuries and was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland by LifeFlight.

The initial investigation revealed medical conditions and speed are believed to be contributing factors in the crash, according to Urquhart.

The road was closed for a short period of time as crash investigators and emergency responders investigated the scene and attended to Coffin. The incident remains under investigation.
