MADISON — A Somerset County Sheriff’s Office pickup truck was damaged Saturday morning when it collided with a car on Main Street in Madison, according to officials.
The crash occurred at 9:37 a.m. when Sgt. Mathew Cunningham was driving the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado pickup east on Main Street, also known as Route 148, according to Chief Deputy Michael Mitchell of the Sheriff’s Office.
Mitchell said Sunday that Cunningham was responding to an emergency with his truck’s emergency lights and siren activated and was trying to pass a vehicle in front of him that was stopped in his travel lane.
In front of that vehicle and also eastbound was a 2012 Ford Focus sedan driven by Sandra Frost, 81, of Madison, Mitchell said.
As Cunningham was passing the vehicle in front of him, Frost was turning the Focus left into her driveway. Although Cunningham tried to avoid the Focus, the truck collided with the car, according to Mitchell. The front passenger side of the truck hit the car’s driver’s side fender, in front of its door, he said.
Frost was alone inside the car and wearing a seat belt, Mitchell said. Although Frost did not appear to be injured, she was taken by ambulance to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan as a precaution, he said. Cunningham also was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
Lt. Michael Knight, patrol division commander with the Sheriff’s Office, investigated the crash, according to Mitchell. Knight was assisted at the scene by the Madison Fire Department and Anson-Madison-Starks Ambulance service.
Mitchell said the Focus had extensive damage. He said he hesitated to say the pickup truck was destroyed.
Before the crash, Mitchell said, the Sheriff’s Office was preparing to retire the pickup. Given the vehicle’s age and high mileage, Mitchell said he was not sure it will be repaired.
