AUBURN — City Councilor Richard Whiting is seeking reelection to represent Ward 1 and continue his efforts to bring common sense and moderation to decision making.

Richard Whiting

According to a written statement from Whiting, he is committed to striving for a more open and inclusive city government, maximizing citizen participation in municipal decision making, improving relations with Lewiston, and reforming the critically important appointment process for municipal and quasi-municipal boards.

He said he continues to closely monitor Lake Auburn watershed protection issues, and considers this his most important obligation, as all of Lake Auburn lies within Ward 1. He said he takes seriously his obligation to respond promptly to citizen inquiries, and to understand the issues that are most important to Auburn residents.

Whiting served as executive director of Auburn Housing Authority for many years and has been an Auburn resident since he was 10 days old. He has lived or worked in every ward in Auburn and said he is dedicated to keeping the high quality of life which makes Auburn such a distinctive place to live.

He served as chairman of the Maine Affordable Housing Coalition and was a board member of the Northern New England Housing Investment Fund and Maine Preservation. Whiting was an Auburn Planning Board member for 12 years, served as president of the Auburn Public Library, and as Building Committee chairman for library renovation and expansion 20 years ago.

He has been a BookReach reader to local day cares for about 20 years, as part of a joint program between the Auburn Public Library and Lewiston Public Library. He is co-chairman of the Healthy Androscoggin Advisory Committee, and serves on the Maine MILL museum board.

He is married to Bridget Whiting and has an adult son, Cullen, who resides in Portland.
