PORTLAND — A convicted sex offender from Lewiston pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to possessing sexually explicit images of a 6-year-old child, according to a Department of Justice news release.

Mark A. Burns, 60, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to possessing child sexual abuse material, the release said.

Burns was arrested in April when the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit detected a sexually explicit image of a 6-year-old shared from Burns’ internet protocol address. A search warrant was executed by Homeland Security Investigations agents. Burns’ tablet contained hundreds of videos and images of children ranging from 6 months to young teens engaged in sexually explicit conduct, the release said.

Burns was convicted in 2016 in a Maine court of possessing sexually explicit material involving a child under 12 years old.

Burns is a lifetime registrant on the Maine Sex Offender Registry.

As a repeat offender, he faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and up to a lifetime of supervised release.

The U.S. Probation Office will complete a presentence investigation. Burns will be sentenced by a federal judge, the release said.
