A 40-year-old Scarborough man died in a single-vehicle crash on Route 1 early Monday.
Scarborough police say the car driven by Mudimbiyi Kalombo crashed in front of the Comfort Inn just after 2:30 a.m. Emergency personnel arrived to find Kalombo unresponsive in the car.
He was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he later died, police said. Police have not released any information about what may have caused the crash. Scarborough police deferred all questions about the crash to the responding officer, who was no longer on duty later Monday morning.
Family members say Kalombo, who was returning home from work, did not collide with anything and that when police found his car on the side of the road Kalombo did not have any apparent physical injuries. A cousin, Khadija Ahmed, said the family is awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death. She declined to speak more about Kalombo.
Kalombo immigrated to the United States with his family about two decades ago, according to his father, Faustin Kalombo. The family settled in Boston, where they joined a tight-knit Congolese community.
Faustin Kalombo said his son moved to Maine about five years ago after they argued about Kalombo’s desire to live with a girlfriend and they became estranged.
Kalombo’s girlfriend did not respond Monday to requests to talk about Kalombo and the crash.
The crash is being investigated by Scarborough police with assistance from the Windham Police Department.
