BETHEL — The giant slide at the Big Adventure Center on Mayville Road has been sold and will be transported to an Indiana campground, owner Paul Legault said.

Since the slide was built in 2001, people have trespassed, climbed the nearly 40-foot tower and skied down the slide, he said.

The center was abandoned in 2013 and Legault and his wife, Charisa, eventually bought it. During COVID-19, their 1888 Wedding Barn business went from hosting 30 weddings to three.

“We were bored, so we bought this place,” he said. Since then they have made improvements, hauling out trailers full of debris to upgrade the miniature golf course.

The six-acre property has 1,300 feet abutting the Androscoggin River. They hope to create a larger center that incorporates the existing climbing wall and laser tag facilities, and add batting cages, high-definition golf and a go-kart track under an elevated building with a view of the river.

In the meantime, the iconic slide will be taken 1,000 miles on a flatbed truck to its new home.
