AUBURN — A motorcyclist was killed Thursday afternoon after colliding with a pickup truck on Route 4.

The crash occurred shortly before 1 p.m. in a stretch of Route 4 near Roy’s All Steak Hamburgers when the motorcyclist collided with a truck hauling heavy machinery. Early reports were that the biker was pinned beneath the truck and that he was unresponsive when rescuers reached him.

The rider was declared dead at the scene, police said.

Witnesses reported that it appeared the driver of the truck had been pulling out of Wallingford’s Equipment when the collision occurred. Police said the motorcycle rider had been heading north when the collision occurred.

The identity of the motorcycle rider was not released as police sought to notify family members. The crash was being reconstructed later in the day as an investigation into the cause got underway.

Police, fire and rescue crews shut down part of Route 4 as the rescue efforts got underway. By 1:45 p.m., traffic had come to a standstill in the northbound lanes.
