LEWISTON — Wesleyan jumped out to a two-touchdown lead, then kept its distance during a back-and-forth second half to beat Bates 28-17 in each team’s NESCAC football season opener Friday night at Garcelon Field.

Nick Candido threw a pair of first-half touchdown passes for the Cardinals — 19 yards to Chase Wilson in the first quarter, and 9 yards to Tyler Flynn in the second. Marcos Ruiz kicked a 37-yard field goal with 40 seconds left in the first half to get the Bobcats on the scoreboard, down 14-3.

Candido connected with Ezra Jenifer on a 16-yard touchdown pass to put Wesleyan up 21-3 early in the third quarter, then Ryan Lynskey answered with the first of his two second-half touchdowns for Bates three minutes later.

Flynn ran in from 1 yard out to stretch the Cardinals’ lead back to 28-10 in the final minute of the third quarter.

Lynskey caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Colton Bosselait to cap off the scoring early in the fourth. Ruiz was 2 for 2 on extra points.

Daniel Yoon made all four of his extra points for Wesleyan.

Candido was 28 of 37 for 341 yards, while Bosselait completed 10 of 27 passes for 128 yards.

Lynskey was Bates’ leading rusher (40 yards on 10 carries) and receiver (five catches for 74 yards).

For Wesleyan, Thoma Elkhoury caught 12 passes for 147 yards.
