On Nov. 7 and before, Mainers can vote on what leading climate activist Bill McKibben has called “a model for transforming a nation and a world seeking (climate) solutions,” according to a news release from Ed Friedman with the Friends.

Climate leaders across the U.S. are watching. The people-powered Pine Tree Power campaign for public nonprofit power delivery has been endorsed by national groups such as 350.org and Sierra Club as well as Maine Youth for Climate Justice, Maine Climate Action Now! and others, but it also faces a multimillion-dollar ad campaign against it funded by private industry as well as governments of Spain, Qatar, Norway and Canada.

Berry is a Maine-based business, education and policy leader. Our Power is a movement to replace the state’s two large, investor-owned electric utilities with a not-for-profit, consumer-owned utility that will focus on the state’s climate goals, cutting costs and improving reliability.

The Friends host the Winter Speaker Series October through May on the second Wednesday of each month. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and ability for participants to attend from out of the area, the series continues via Zoom.

Series presentations are free and open to the public. To see speaker biographies, full event schedules, video recordings of past presentations, become a member, and learn more about to help protect Merrymeeting Bay and the Gulf of Maine, visit the website.
