As we are facing elections for local offices and committees in a few weeks, the recent standoff in Congress over funding the functions of government gives us an opportunity to reflect on a faction which has been growing lately, like a cancer, in our body politic.

We elect public servants to serve … our interests, yes, but recognizing we are part of a community and electorate. We need leaders and representatives who seek to solve problems so as to benefit their communities and constituents.

The ones seeking conflict are not trying to solve problems. They are only interested in capturing attention and promoting themselves.  They have no interest in improving their communities.

We shouldn’t give these people power, as they will always use it to advance their own personal ambitions.
