NEWRY — North American Wife Carrying Champions Caleb and Justine Roesler of Wisconsin claimed their second consecutive win Saturday at the 24th Sunday River Resort event. The couple came to the Maine event for the first time last year.

Team “Speed Roeslers” bested 24 other couples to face off against Finnish legend and 22-year return competitor John Lund and Karen May — known as team “This is getting Silly. Hope & love Win!” Lund has returned to North America every year since 2001 earning a place among the top three teams each year.

The Roeslers won six cases of beer and five-times Justine’s weight in cash — $564. Lund and May took home May’s weight in beer and soda, and a $50 Sunday River gift card. Third place team “Guac ‘N Roll” took home a $50 Sunday River gift card. The teams’ times were 1:04, 1:21 and 1:35, respectively.

Team “We Actually Aren’t Putting a Label on it” won The Clydesdale Award, a couple netting over 350 pounds, and The Combined Age Over 80 Award went to team “High and Dry.”

Three new categories earned competitor prizes: The Most Average Award, the team with the closest to the average time of all competitors, went to team “Deb & Norm”; the Best Dressed Award went to team “Zabeze Habibi”; and the Most Epic Wipeout Award went to team “White Chocolate Mocha.”
