John Karkos

BRUNSWICK – “Jack”, aka “Henry”, passed away at Mid-Coast Hospital on Oct. 11, 2023 after recently being diagnosed with acute leukemia. He took with him his beloved Raiders hat, a Guinness tucked in each pocket, beautiful memories of family and friends and a heart full of love. His body was no longer in pain and his soul was at peace. Jack had an incredible sense of humor and was full of many stories and knowledge and we know he is sharing all of this with his new audience.

Born in Lewiston on Feb. 5, 1942 as the only child to Johnny and Helmi Karkos, he grew up in Lisbon Falls, a town that he loved for its people and its sports, especially football. Jack excelled both academically and athletically, and helped lead Lisbon High to consecutive state championships in football as their quarterback. In later years, he was one of their most loyal fans.

Jack went to UMaine to study Mechanical Engineering. It was there that he met Gail Howison. Gail and Jack had been married for 59 years at the time of his death. Upon graduating in 1964, he began his career at Carrier Corp in Syracuse, N.Y., and then worked in the International Division of Polaroid, where he was instrumental in the roll out of the SX70 camera. Jack’s greatest professional achievement was the Magnetic Drive Motor he invented for McDonald’s smoothie machines. He was awarded 50 combined Domestic and International patents for this work. He loved to describe himself as a “tinkerer”.

Jack and Gail had a beautiful family whom he loved more than anything. Scott and his wife, Denise Chabot, Karen and her husband, Tad Merritt, and his grandson Brady. He worshipped each of them and considered his family to be his greatest accomplishment. He and Brady were best buddies, and he cherished every moment they spent together. He also loved to spend time with the golden retriever, Chase, who brought joy to his days and peace to his soul.

Jack did not want a funeral but hoped instead that friends would raise a glass and remember a fun moment they shared together. Also, he hoped they might say a little prayer that his LV Raiders would have a good year.

Jack’s family want to give their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the incredible people at Mid-Coast Hospital for all they did for Jack in his final days.

We are looking forward to a celebration of his life at a future date
