AUBURN — A big second quarter gave the St. Dominic field hockey team a 3-0 quarterfinal shutout over Sacopee Valley on Tuesday.

St. Dom’s outlasted Sacopee Valley 1-0 in double overtime earlier this month, but scoring came easier to the Saints in the postseason matchup, in which all three goals were scored in the second quarter.

Alexyss Bairds opened the scoring with a goal that was set up by Chloe Beachesne. Madeline Andrews’ goal made it 2-0 and Abigail Labonte capped the scoring. Goalie Maia Cote only needed to make one save for St. Dom’s.

Lily Kick stopped six shots in goal for the fifth-seeded Hawks (6-6).

The fourth-seeded Saints (7-8) will face either No. 1 Spruce Mountain (13-1) or No. 8 Waynflete (5-7) in the Class C South semifinals later this week.

DIRIGO 2, STEARNS/SCHENCK 0: Grace Averill scored twice to lift the third-seeded Cougars (11-2-2) over the No. 6 Minutemen (6-8-1) in the Class C North quarterfinals in Dixfield.

Averill’s first goal was set up by Layla Merrill and gave Dirigo a 1-0 lead in the first quarter. Averill added to the lead with an unassisted third-period goal. Goalie Keira Kelley made one save.

Stearns goalie Ava Perkins stopped six shots.

The Cougars advance to face second-seeded Foxcroft (13-1-1) in the C North semifinals later this week. The Ponies defeated seventh seed Mountain Valley 2-0 on Tuesday.

MESSALONSKEE 2, LEWISTON 0: Francesca Caccamo scored late in the fourth quarter and the second-seeded Eagles survived a scare from the seventh-seeded Blue Devils in a Class A North quarterfinal game in Oakland.

Messalonskee will host No. 6 Mt. Blue, which upset No. 3 Mt. Ararat 1-0 on Tuesday, in the semifinals later this week.

FOXCROFT 2, MOUNTAIN VALLEY 0: Marie Galera scored the first goal and assisted on the second as the second-seeded Ponies (13-1-1) put away the No. 7 Falcons (5-9-1) indoors at the Jim Robinson Field House in Dover-Foxcroft.

Galera scored unassisted in the final minute of the first half to spoil Mountain Valley’s shutout attempt.

Galera fed Hilary Howard for the clinching goal in the second half.

Emma Bither stopped all four shots she faced to secure the shutout for Foxcroft. Brooke Brown made 16 saves for Mountain Valley.

LAKE REGION 2, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER/NYA 0: Abigail Travis had a goal and an assist as the third-seeded Lakers (9-4-2) beat the sixth-seeded Patriots (7-6-2) in a Class B South quarterfinal in Naples.

Lake Region advances to face No. 2 Freeport in the semifinals on Saturday.

Mia Letarte also scored for Lake Region and Emma Nadeau added an assist. Reign Hart stopped three shots for the Lakers.

Samantha Poulin had 14 saves for Gray-New Gloucester/NYA.

GIRLS SOCCER
MADISON 8, DIRIGO 0: Raegan Cowan, Alison Griffeth and Mackenzie Robbins bagged two goals each as the Bulldogs breezed to an eight-player South victory over the Cougars in Madison.

Cowan added an assist in the win for Madison, which improved to 13-2. The Bulldogs also got a goal and three assists from Ella Haynie, a goal from Kylie Furbush and an assist from Jillian Linkletter.

Dirigo’s season ends at 3-11 with the loss.
