The Maine Nordiques held off the New Hampshire Mountain Kings’ third-period comeback attempt Saturday night.

Despite New Hampshire scoring twice in the final frame, Maine won its sixth straight game with a 5-4 victory in an NAHL East Division matchup at Tri-Town Arena in Hooksett, New Hampshire.

“Playing 5-on-5 was working really well; we only did it for about 20 minutes today,” Maine Nordiques coach Nick Skerlick said. “We were generating simple passes into grade-A opportunities. We were using the width of the neutral zone. We were using our width passing side-to-side. I think the most exciting part for us is our defensemen were really good again, making quick decisions.”

The Nordiques racked up 42 minutes in penalties in the game.

Kellen Murphy led the way for the Nordiques with a goal and two assists. Fellow forwards Nils Forselius, Nick Ramm and Charles Tardif each had a goal and an assist in the win.

“Kellen was really good, Charles Tardif was really good, Ryan Panico was really good when he wasn’t in the penalty box,” Skerlick said. “I want to give a shoutout to Nick Ramm, who was playing out of his mind.”

Tardif and Murphy each have 12 goals this season — tied for second on the team. Nick Romeo had 13 before getting traded to the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League on Monday.

Murphy opened the scoring for the Nordiques on the power play early in the first period.

Hunter Fetterloff scored on his former team late in the opening frame to tie the contest at 1-1 for the Mountain Kings (8-9-3, 19 points).

Tardif put Maine (13-4-2, 28 points) up 2-1 in the first few minutes of the middle frame. Ramm built the Nordiques lead to 3-1 with his second point of the period, after he picked up an assist on Tardif’s tally.

Forselius had the third straight goal for the Nordiques eight minutes into the middle frame when the puck got behind New Hampshire goalie Cooper Rautenstrauch (22 saves) on the man-advantage for a 4-1 lead.

“Our power play went 2 for 2. It’s something we haven’t done all year,” Skerlick said. “We haven’t scored two power-play goals in a game this season.”

New Hampshire went 2 for 9 on the man-advantage.

A minute later, Jack Costanzo’s shot beat Maine goalie Thomas Heaney (22 saves) to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Cody Pisarczyk ended the second-period scoring barrage when he put the Nordiques up 5-2 late in the stanza.

Kim Hilmersson, another former Nordiques player, found the score sheet in the third period to get the Mountain Kings within 5-3. He scored again down the stretch to cut the deficit to 5-4.

The Nordiques next host the Rochester Jr. Americans on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
