Fairfield police are seeking the identity of a man who led authorities on a chase late Sunday through Norridgewock and Fairfield before ditching the stolen car he was driving in Benton and fleeing into the woods.
“At this point, the driver is still at large,” Fairfield police Officer Casey Dugas said.
He said the car, a 2010 Subaru Impreza, was reported stolen in Farmington and was eventually abandoned by the driver. In the car, police found a dog which was taken to the Fairfield Police Department until officials were able to locate its owner.
The chase started about 9:15 p.m. Sunday on Mercer Road in Norridgewock when a Somerset County sheriff’s deputy tried to stop the Impreza because it was speeding, according to sheriff’s Chief Deputy Mike Mitchell. When the car didn’t stop on Route 139, a sergeant called the deputy to discontinue the chase.
Dugas, public information officer for Fairfield police, said Fairfield patrol Sgt. Patrick Mank then picked up the chase on Norridgewock Road in Fairfield. The suspect turned left onto Center Road, traveled into downtown on Main Street and crossed the bridges into Benton, Dugas said. The driver continued onto Neck Road, crossed the bridge over the Sebasticook River and then headed down Albion Road, he said.
The driver ditched the car in the 500s block of Albion Road, according to Dugas.
“He stopped and bailed out, and ran into the woods,” he said.
A Maine State Police canine tried to track the driver but was unsuccessful, according to Dugas.
During the chase, the Impreza, which was being driven erratically, reached speeds of up to 94 mph, he said.
“We still haven’t positively (identified) the driver, but we’re investigating,” he said.
Fairfield police impounded the Impreza, he said.
