The University of Maine at Farmington and Thomas College jointly announced Wednesday the creation of the Meader Cup in honor of the late Dick Meader.

The inaugural Meader Cup matchup between the UMaine-Farmington and Thomas men’s basketball teams is scheduled for Jan. 23 in Farmington.

The Meader Cup will be contested every season in the first meeting of the year between the Beavers’ and Terriers’ men’s teams.

Dick Meader, who died in October 2022, coached at both Thomas and UMaine-Farmington, the latter his alma mater, during a career that featured 513 combined victories between the two schools. He is the winningest coach in UMF history, with 353 victories in 27 seasons, the last in 2019-20. Meader won 160 games in 17 seasons at Thomas prior to returning to Farmington to lead the Beavers.

As a player, Meader scored a then-program record 1,195 points during his UMF career, including a single-game record 40 points that stood until his son, Darren, broke the record in 2000 while playing for his dad. Meader is enshrined in numerous halls of fame throughout Maine and New England, and the Hall of Fame rooms at both UMF and Thomas bear his name.

“Coach Meader left behind a lasting legacy on the game of basketball. He was truly a one-of-a-kind human being who touched the lives of every person he came into contact with,” the school’s athletic directors, UMF’s Jamie Beaudoin and Thomas’ Chris Parsons, said in a joint statement in a news release. “I am honored to have had the opportunity to spend so much time with such an incredible person. The Meader Cup does not even begin to cover all that Coach Meader meant to both institutions and the game of basketball. But we are thrilled that we will be able to recognize and appreciate him each year when UMF and Thomas play one another.”
