MaineCare amended a rule this past fall to allow those ages 3 to 18 years covered under MaineCare to get the updated COVID-19 vaccine at any MaineCare enrolled pharmacy, which is any pharmacy in Maine, with an appointment.

Children up to 3 years old covered by MaineCare must get a vaccine from a health care provider at a clinic.

The previous rule during the rollout of the latest COVID-19 vaccine last fall required that all minors get COVID-19 vaccinations from a health care provider in a doctor’s office or community clinic, according to Maine Department of Health and Human Services Director of Communications Jackie Farwell.

That decision was made because of “the changes in vaccine administration from commercialization and the end of federal public health emergency flexibilities in May,” she said.

It revised that rule soon after it was announced to improve access to the vaccine because that rule posed challenges, she said. MaineCare Services informed health care providers of this change Nov. 17.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that anyone 5 and older get one dose of the updated COVID-19 vaccine. At this time, there is no booster to the updated vaccine.

MaineCare recipients should contact the MaineCare Pharmacy Help Desk at 1-866-796-2463 for more information regarding where to get vaccinated.
