WILTON — Fire crews from seven departments responded to a Wilton residence fully engulfed in flames about noontime Saturday.
Wilton Fire Chief Sonny Dunham said the sole occupant of the 416 Route 2 West home, Ben York, 63, was not inside, but it took crews some time to figure that out.
“He’s an older gentleman who keeps mostly to himself,” Dunham said, “So we didn’t have any idea whether or not he was in the house.”
The home contained no pets and no one was injured.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it appeared to have come from a wood stove, possibly with its door ajar, Dunham said.
Dunham said he was able to connect York with American Red Cross.
Assisting Wilton fire crews were Farmington, Temple, East Dixfield, Jay, Livermore Falls and Chesterville fire departments.
