AUBURN — St. Dominic Academy’s top line did most of the damage in Monday’s 5-2 boys hockey victory over Old Town/Orono at Norway Savings Bank Arena.

Ben Dumais and Timothee Ouellette each had two goals in the victory.

“We move pretty fast; it just shows me and Ben’s speed,” Ouellette said. “We can blow by (defensemen). If you aren’t going to play up to our speed, you are going to pay for it.”

Old Town/Orono coach Chris Thurlow noticed the depth that St. Dom’s had.

“They have 10 guys who can control the puck at ease; we have a couple of guys — that’s the difference,” Thurlow said.

In the opening minute, the Black Bears (3-3-1) tried to clear the puck out of their own end but hit the ceiling, causing a defensive zone faceoff. St. Dom’s (7-2-0) scored off the draw when Tim Ouellette won the puck to Dumais, who skated into the slot and ripped a wrist shot past Orono/Old Town goalie Brock Parks 47 seconds into the game.

“Timmy won it to me off the faceoff and I skated, saw an opening top corner, and scored,” Dumais said.

Ouellette pushed the Saints lead to 2-0 when his wrist shot from the right circle went through traffic and beat Parks cleanly 8:11 into the first period. Thomas Casserly had the helper.

“Well, the first attempt, I tried faking a shot going to Ben, and (the Black Bears) picked up on that,” Ouellette said. “The guy was a little slow getting out to me — I thought about going far pad and it went through his blocker and went in.”

St. Dom’s controlled the play until the Saints got whistled for their first penalty shortly after the goal. Orono/Old Town finally got its first shot on goal during the power play and halfway through, the Black Bears received another man advantage.

The Saints killed the 5-on-3, but Dylan Davis slid home the puck past St. Dom’s goalie Jayden Lynn on the 5-on-4 power play to get the Black Bears on the board 10:35 into the first.

“We have a decent power play unit. We spend a lot of time in practice,” Thurlow said. “We are pretty effective and we have been successful this year. That was our chance to get a couple.”

Old Town/Orono pressured St. Dom’s late in the first period, but a blocked shot by Ouellette sent the puck to the Black Bears’ zone and Dumais notched his second tally with 11.2 seconds remaining. Ouellette had the assist.

“It was a weird play. I didn’t really look at the net, I just shot,” Dumais said. “I was kind of lucky, but we got a goal either way at the end of the period. I thought we outplayed them that period and deserved to be up more than one.”

Thurlow didn’t realize a blocked shot isn’t icing until he had someone look it up.

“It’s indeed a rule; a blocked shot, it’s no icing,” Thurlow said. “I have never seen that. It’s crazy.”

Rhys Levasseur notched his first career goal early in the second period, with Ethan Pelletier setting it up to extend the Saints’ lead to 4-1.

“He got the hard hat in the locker room, and he played pretty well,” St. Dom’s coach Dan D’Auteuil said of Levasseur.

The Black Bears struggled to get shots on goal in the second after only putting up six in the first period. They only had one in the second frame until they got on the power play late, where they put a couple of shots on Lynn (11 saves) and four total for the period. Meanwhile, the Saints put up 13 in the first and 15 in the second.

“We preached to them all day, get the puck and shoot,” D’Auteuil said. “It seemed to work.”

While the Saints were shorthanded, Ouellette drew a penalty shot when he got tripped on a breakaway. On his attempt, he glided toward Parks (31 saves) and his snap shot beat the netminder over the blocker at the 12:39 mark of the middle stanza.

“The goalie was sticking to his glove side — he was really dominant,” Ouellette said. “You can tell throughout, he was catching a lot of shots. On the penalty shot, he was off his angle and just fired it.”

Davis scored his second goal in the third period when he broke free from a Saints defender in the slot and his shot found the back of the net. Alex McCannell had the assist.

“Dylan Davis, he’s a good player, and he puts us on his back sometimes,” Thurlow said. “He willed that last one.”

The Black Bears outshot the Saints 8-6 in the third.

Saints backup goalie Kessel Lynn made three saves in 10 minutes of action.
