POLAND — At Monday night’s Regional School Unit 16 board of directors meeting, directors gave approval to Skip Crosby, World Language teacher at Poland Regional High School, to lead a group of students and adult chaperones to Guatemala from April 6-14.

This will be Crosby’s 6th trip with students to Guatemala with the Safe Passage organization, known as Camino Seguro.

The estimated cost for the trip is $3,025 for each person.

Sage Passage was established in 1999 by Hanley Denning, a 1992 Bowdoin College graduate, who initially traveled to Guatemala in 1997 to learn Spanish.

Safe Passage’s purpose is to transform “lives by providing students in the Guatemala City garbage dump community with an excellent education, a higher quality of life, and pathways to a job with dignity so they can achieve a better future for themselves and their families.”

In other business, District Chairwoman Mary Martin said RSU 16 is in the process of creating a Strategic Plan Team (SPT).

The committee will be made of up 3 administrators, 2 teachers, plus a school director, a town official, and a citizen representative each from Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland, the towns which comprise RSU 16.

The SPT will update and prioritize the five-year plan to align with the evolving needs of the district’s students, buildings and community.

Membership will be formally announced on Jan. 16.
