BETHEL — Bethel firefighters were able to keep a fire contained to a laundry room at 514 East Bethel Road. The electrical fire started in the wiring of a stackable washer/dryer unit said Bethel Fire Chief Mike Jodrey.

The call came in around 5:20 p.m. Jan. 22.

Bethel has automatic mutual aid from Newry and Greenwood on structure fires. Both towns responded. Jodrey said he turned Newry around but asked Greenwood to stay so Bethel could refill their air pack bottles from the Greenwood truck.

About 12 firefighters were on scene at the one-alarm fire.

Jodrey said the homeowner will be displaced for a few weeks because of the heavy smoke damage throughout the house. “The fire was insignificant, it was the smoke damage that was the biggest issue,” he said.
