FARMINGTON — Franklin County commissioners agreed Tuesday to get an early start on next year’s budget.

Rather than waiting until April, which is normal, they will begin their review for fiscal year 2024-25 on March 12.

Commissioners have regularly scheduled meetings March 5 and 19, but County Administrator Amy Bernard suggested they begin their review on an off week, like March 12.

Department heads are expected to have their budgets to Bernard on Tuesday.

Commissioners also voted to buy an automated external defibrillator for the county courthouse, which doesn’t have one.

Commissioner Bob Carlton of Freeman Township said he was at an event recently when someone collapsed. When an AED was brought out, he realized the county does not have one at the courthouse.

The cost would be just under $2,000, Bernard said, which includes the charging station, signs and other related items.

Bernard has been in touch with NorthStar EMS ambulance service and the Sheriff’s Office to see if they can get in on a bulk purchase.

Commissioners also agreed to ask the Maine Department of Transportation about being a consulting party regarding the Chain of Ponds bridge that needs repair or replacement.
