Jon Webster Holmes
DIXFIELD – Jon Webster Holmes was born Feb. 26, 1945 in Farmington, son of Paul H. and Doris I Holmes. He was educated in Dixfield schools and graduated in 1963. Jon also attended Kents Hill School and Burdett College in Boston, Mass. graduating in 1966. He married Susan Wells of Readfield in 1965. He worked for his parents in their local grocery market for many years before buying the market in 1976. Jon and his wife Susan worked there until 2007 when they retired.
He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Susan. He is survived by his daughter, Julie and her husband Chris Dickson, his son Scott and his wife Jen Holmes; along with five grandchildren, Jordan Holmes and partner Jake, Benjamin Holmes and partner Jaclyn, Taylor Cestaro and husband Connor; Caleb Holmes and partner Chelsea, and Samuel Holmes and partner Maddy; four great grandchildren, Easton, Claire, Wynter, Kate and soon to be born Crew.
He was President of the local snowmobile club and active in the Maine Snowmobile Association; past President of the Dixfield/Dirigo Alumni Association; a charter member of the now defunct Dixfield Jaycees; head of youth sports in Dixfield for many years and coached little league during that time; active in the Cub Scouts; a 20 year member of the Dixfield Fire Department retiring as a Captain; active in hockey playing in high school, prep school, college and then the Cardiac league; helped to manage and played in the Oxie League Softball League; was Dixfield’s Citizen of the Year in 2008. In recent years, he was active in the Dirigo Boosters, SCORE, River Valley Volunteer of the Year; President of WLA and worked at the Rumford Information Booth.
In the last few years, Jon found a passion doing “Trail Magic”, feeding through hikers on the Appalachian Trail. It brought him so much joy to feed them the best ever bacon cheeseburger!
Jon was beloved by so many people and was known for being quite the prankster. He was also quick with a joke and loved to laugh. His family and all his friends will miss that! Jon is now resting peacefully with the love of his life, Susan.
