RUMFORD — Twins Nora and Henri McCourt of Mt. Blue won freestyle titles on the first day of the KVAC Nordic skiing championships Wednesday at Black Mountain of Maine.

The McCourts, who are juniors, paced a strong contingent of Mt. Blue skiers, which included the top 3 finishes in both the boys and girls races.

Henri McCourt finished the boys 5-kilometer race in 12 minutes, 10.3 seconds. Teammate Elias Bartlett (12:18.7) came in second, followed by Damian Wynn (12:32) in third.

Leavitt’s Jacob Dening (12:37.3) placed fourth and Brunswick’s Wyeth Mackey (13:08.6) rounded out the top five.

Mt. Blue had another top-10 finisher in Eli Hoeft, who placed seventh.

Other boys top 10 finishers were Brunswick’s Sam Cashman and Daire Woodruff in sixth and eighth, respectively; Camden Hills’ Cameron Pinchbeck took ninth and Oxford Hills Cameron Sherbinski was 10th finishing three-tenths of a second ahead of teammate Cody Roy.

Nora McCourt’s winning time in the girls race was 13:55.4. Teammates joining her in then top three were Maya Kellett (14:10.6) in second and Natalie McCarthy (14:30.5) in third.

Lucinda Carroll (sixth) and Elizabeth Strickland (10th) also placed in the top 10, while Abby Dorr took 11th for the Cougars.

Brunswick’s Maeve Woodruff (14:36.5) finished fourth and Edward Little’s Kat Garcia (14:49.5) came in fifth.

Leavitt’s Abby Marston (seventh) and Jade Haylock (ninth) and Edward Little’s Nora Condit (eighth) filled the other top 10 finishing positions.

The KVAC Nordic championships will conclude Saturday with the classical race at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington.

ALPINE SKIING
KVAC GIANT SLALOM: Oxford Hills’ Gianna DeVivo won the girls giant slalom title and five top-10 finishes give the Edward Little boys a big lead at the KVAC Alpine skiing championships Wednesday at Saddleback Mountain in Sandy River Plantation.

DeVivo accumulated a combined two-run time of 1 minute, 32.98 seconds. Mt. Blue’s Abbey Goodspeed (1:33.41) was the runner-up, Camden Hills’ Zola Roberts (1:34.73) took third, Edward Little’s Anaya Egge (1:36.33) placed fourth and Brunswick’s Alexa Scott (1:36.43) was fifth.

The Red Eddies had two more top-10 finishers: Kaelyn Langlois in sixth and Maddie Ranger in eighth. Leavitt’s Sophie Simard placed seventh and Camden Hills’ Amelia Mills and Maggie Metzler finished ninth and 10th, respectively.

Landon Marquis of Camden Hills won the boys giant slalom championship with a time of 1:26.99. Oxford Hills’ Ross Campbell (1:28.58) finished second, Skowhegan’s Kaden Salsbury (1:29.74) was third and Mt. Blue’s Trent Beaudoin (1:30.31) came in fourth.

Edward Little skiers claimed the next five spots. Evan O’Donnell led the way, placing fifth, while Ethan Levesque took sixth, Carter Hill seventh, Nate Bigos-Lowe eighth and Kai Thistle ninth.

Mt. Blue’s Brodie Farmer came in 10th.

The Edward Little boys racked up 778 points, giving them a 25-point lead over second-place Camden Hills (753) heading into Saturday’s slalom championships at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington.

Oxford Hills is third with 738 points, followed by Skowhegan (728) and Hampden (722).

Camden Hills is first on the girls side, with 771 points. The Edward Little girls are eight points back at 763. Oxford Hills (735) is next, then Mt. Blue (722) and Brunswick (714) sits fifth.
