RUMFORD — Maranacook went 1-2 in the boys competition and Orono did the same among the girls competitors on Day 1 of the Mountain Valley Conference Nordic championships on Thursday afternoon at Black Mountain of Maine.

Wyatt Stevenson paced the field in the 5k freestyle boys race with a time of 13:46.0. Black Bears teammate Silas Bartol was the only racer within a minute of Stevenson, clocking in at 14:18.8. Spruce Mountain’s Samuel Geissinger placed third in a time of 15:29.0.

Orono skiers took the next four spots, led by Liam Waring. Evan Gerbi, Ben Arsenault and Owen Beane followed. Winthrop’s Sam St. Germain finished in ninth (17:08.2), just two-hundredths of a second behind eighth-place finisher Jeffrey Lemieux of Maranacook. Orono’s Nathan Culina placed 10th.

Mt. Abram’s top finisher was Carter Butterfield in 12th. Kayan Degruttola placed 15th to lead Telstar’s competitors. Mountain Valley’s top finishers were Joseph Packard, Khalil Hamdi and David Packard in places 22nd through 24th. Darryl Curtis was Dirigo’s highest finisher in 32nd.

It was a sister act at the finish line of the girls race, with Red Riots sophomore Clara White crossing more than a minute ahead of senior sister Ruth White for the individual title. Clara White clocked in at 14:58.6, with Ruth White capturing runner-up honors in a time of 16:05.9.

Maranacook competitors filled the rest of the top five. Elsa Bergdahl led the trio, followed by Olympia Farrell and Harper Olmstead. Telstar’s Ella Akers placed sixth (19:12.1), just ahead of seventh-place finisher Hannah Perkins of Spruce Mountain (19:26.1).

Megan Spaulding of Dirigo (24:27.4) edged out teammate Sylvia Hodsdon (24:28.2) for 13th place.

The MVC Nordic championships are scheduled to finish up Monday, Feb. 12 with the classical pursuit competition, also at Black Mountain.
