Mystery Photo for Feb. 4, 2024. Russ Dillingham/Sun Journal

We had dozens of correct answers for last week’s Mystery Photo. Many knew the historical story behind Togo, the sled dog depicted in the statue in front of the Maine State Building at Poland Spring in Poland. The bronze statue was created by artist David Smus and dedicated during the 2022 Heritage Day Celebration at Poland Spring. In a random drawing from all the correct entries David Andrews of Auburn was picked as the winner of a $25 Hannaford Supermarket gift card. Andrews wrote: “In the winter of 1925, during a diphtheria epidemic in Nome, Alaska, (a dogsled team led by) Togo and his musher, Leonhard Seppala, ran 261 miles over the roughest terrain to bring life-saving serum to the city. Although a different dog, named Balto, (was leading another relay team over the 674-mile journey on the day they) actually brought the serum into Nome, it was Togo who led the longest and toughest part of the journey. Togo eventually retired to Poland Spring, where Seppala and Elizabeth Ricker managed a kennel raising Togo’s offspring. Togo died in 1929 at the age of 16.” Several entrants noted that the famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race was inspired by Togo’s journey. Others recommended watching the 2019 Disney movie “Togo” about his journey and what was called The Great Race of Mercy. Read a full Sun Journal story about Togo at sunjournal.com.
