A Canaan man was being held Sunday at the Somerset County Jail in East Madison after leading police on a chase Friday through Skowhegan and Madison and then crashing his vehicle in Madison, according to police.
Nicholas Hanson, 39, who was not injured in the crash, was charged with eluding an officer, driving to endanger, failure to register a motor vehicle, criminal speed, refusing to submit to arrest or detention, four counts of violating conditions of release and unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, Chief David Bucknam of the Skowhegan Police Department wrote Saturday in an email.

A jail spokesman said Sunday that Hanson was denied bail and is scheduled to appear Monday at Skowhegan District Court.
On Friday afternoon, Skowhegan police Cpl. Joshua York saw a white vehicle with no license plates leave a “known drug area.” When York attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped off, according to Bucknam. York then followed the vehicle into Madison.
Hanson was unable to negotiate a corner at the intersection of Route 148 and Blackwell Hill Road, causing his vehicle to crash, according to Bucknam.
“Happy to say Nicholas was unharmed and with the help of K9 Reece, 3.7 grams of Fentanyl and 1.3 grams of crack cocaine was found in Nicholas’ possession,” Bucknam wrote in his email.
