LEWISTON — State Sen. Peggy Rotundo, a Lewiston Democrat, announced earlier this month that she is seeking reelection.

“Over the last several months, our city has experienced tragedies that have shaken us to our core,” Rotundo said in a prepared statement. “We are still grieving, beginning to heal, and forging a collective path forward.”

“My heart and my home are here in Lewiston, and each day I look forward to serving the people of our community,” she said.

Declaring herself “eager and ready to continue fighting hard to improve the lives of Lewiston people,” Rotundo vowed to “strengthen our businesses and economy, and help our community rebuild and grow into what we all know is possible.”

Rotundo helped to found what became the Harward Center for Community Partnership at Bates College. She has been active over the years with many organizations, including the Lewiston Auburn Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, the Promise Early Education Center and LA Arts.

Rotundo, whose political career began three decades ago on the Lewiston School Committee, won her first term in the Legislature in 2000. She served four terms in both the Senate and the House before taking a break until she ran again for Senate in 2022.

In 2022, Rotundo garnered 59% of the vote to defeat Republican challenge Ricky LaChapelle, a Republican city councilor. So far, no challenger has emerged.

Her campaign announcement said Rotundo, who co-chairs the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee, is “known for her bipartisanship, experience, and common sense leadership.”

“I am proud of our work to pass two bipartisan budgets over the last year,” Rotundo said. “We prioritized support for hard-working families all over Maine — and I worked hard to ensure Lewiston got our fair share of state funding.”

The election is Nov. 5.
