DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am hoping someone in Sun Spots Land knows where to find the delicious Amish cheese found during the summer at the Garden Spot Market at 170 Leeds Junction Road in Wales. I have checked Hannaford, Axis and Blackie’s, but this delicious cheese is nowhere to be found. — No name, Lewiston

ANSWER: Have you tried contacting the Garden Spot Market at 207-933-2034 and leaving a message? It is closed for the season, according to its website and Facebook page, but perhaps the owner will get back to you and let you know if the cheese is available this time of year and where.

Meanwhile, dear readers, if you are familiar with this cheese and know where to find it, please let us know.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: How does Little Leaf lettuce manage to stay so fresh and crispy? Could there be some kind of preservative in the plastic containers it comes in?

I love the crispness and am very curious about this. I eat lots of salads, adding everything but the kitchen sink. — No name, Lewiston

ANSWER: Good for you for being so healthy and taking care of yourself. I buy these products, too, and have been very happy.

Little Leaf lettuce, grown in Massachusetts, is packaged in “clam shells” made of 100% post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, which is infinitely recyclable. There are no preservatives in this material. And because the lettuces are grown so much closer to us than other brands, some of which come from the West Coast, it gets to our grocery stores — and local consumers — much more quickly.

The growing method for Little Leaf lettuce is hydroponic within a 10-acre greenhouse. Also, the pesticide-free, non-GMO lettuces are not overly sprayed and soaked with water throughout the growing process.
