HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — An early lead wasn’t enough for the Bates College baseball team, which suffered its first defeat of the young season in a 9-2 loss to Hampden-Sydney College on Friday at Ty Cobb Ballpark.

Jake Margiloff singled home Jack Brennan in the top of the first for the Bobcats’ (1-1) first run. Brennan also scored Bates’ second run, coming home on Chris Cimino’s third-inning single, giving the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers (1-3) rallied and doubled up Bates with a four-run bottom of the fourth, knocking out Bobcats starter Sam Hough. The right-hander struck out four batters in 3 1/3 innings while giving up six hits and two walks.

Hamden-Sydney scored three more runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to pull away.

Brennan and Margiloff — the Nos. 1 and 2 hitters in the Bobcats’ lineup — led the offense with two hits apiece out of the seven that Bates batters compiled against Tigers pitchers.
