100 Years Ago: 1924

The second auxiliary benefit dance for Home for the Aged Women to be held at  Mrs. Heth’s Academy tonight, will draw a full hall, as the first affair held was very successful.

50 Years Ago: 1974

About 35 women learned that the thingamajig is a carburetor and that the what’s-the-names are known to the trade as spark plugs, and a lot of other information that may someday help them get away from the side of the road and back home and husband. The occasion was a two-session clinic sponsored by Noyes Tire Company designed to help the unknowing to become acquainted with what is under the hood of the car and how to change a tire.

25 Years Ago: 1999

Auburn Middle School will present a Jazz Night at 7 pm, Thursday, March 4. The program will feature performances by the Middle School Jazz Band directed by Steve Schran and Edward Little Jazz Band directed by Shane Davis. Guest performers will join them. the USM Jazz Band, directed by Scott Reeves.

The USM Jazz Band, a 17 piece student ensemble, performs the works of Ellington, Count Basie, Thad Jones, and contemporary composers Maria Schneider and John Fedchock. Reeves is a writer, composer, and arranger. His texts on improvisation are among the most widely used. He has performed with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the Supremes, the Temptations and Clark Terry. The Middle School program will feature a performance of his original arrangement “Speak Low.”

The first Jazz Night, which will be an annual event, was created to promote the study of Jazz idioms in Auburn’s public schools. Admission is free.
