The Twin City Thunder gave up a lead but still came away with a 3-2 overtime win against the South Shore Kings in a USPHL NCDC game at the Foxboro Sports Center in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Friday afternoon.

The victory has playoff implications.

“With the Cyclones losing in regulation, that helps us with the chase,” Thunder coach Dan Hodge said. “It was a good battle (against South Shore) and we have to do it again tomorrow, hopefully.”

The win puts the Thunder (16-27-3, 35 points) four points back of the Northern Cyclones (15-23-9, 39 points) for the fifth and final playoff spot in the New England Division.

James Tatro scored the game-winner on the power play with 20 seconds left in overtime for the Thunder. Cullen McCormick had an assist, along with Roman Wainwright.

“They took a penalty in overtime and we called a timeout,” Hodge said. “I told the guys, ‘We have less than two minutes left; we are on the power play for the rest of the game.’ (Tatro) made a nice shot from the point.”

South Shore (32-11-4, 68 points) battled back from a 2-0 deficit, starting when Justin Ryan scored his 20th goal of the season late in the second period.

Karim Gayfullin evened the game in the third period when the puck got past Thunder goalie Jeffrey Kreidler.

Aiden Bender opened the scoring for the Thunder a little over seven minutes into the first period, with defensemen Gavin Connelly and Leo Mantenuto recording the assists.

John Clay Humphreys’ shot on the power play got past South Shore goalie Ryan Keyes for a 2-0 lead midway through the first.

The Thunder were 2 for 5 on the man advantage and the Kings were 0 for 4.

Twin City wraps up its three-game set with Shore Shore on Saturday in Foxborough at 1 p.m.

LOCAL SUITS UP FOR THUNDER

Brock Bergeron, a member of Lewiston High School’s 2020 Class A state championship team and 2020 Futures Draft pick for the Thunder, has joined the team for the remainder of the season. Bergeron recently finished his fourth season with The Winchendon School in Winchendon, Massachusetts, where he had 11 goals and 17 assists in 2023-24.

Friday was Bergeron’s second game with the Thunder.

“He will be an affiliate player for the last 10 games,” Hodge said. “His season at Winchendon was over and we said, ‘Hey, come get a look and see how you like it.’ He has played really well; he has made the adjustment to junior hockey better than I thought.”
