AUBURNDALE, Fla. — A positive finish to the end of the first game of a doubleheader led to a good start in the second game for the University of Maine at Farmington baseball team Wednesday.

But the Beavers couldn’t keep that momentum going and settled for a split with Lakeland University.

The Beavers (4-7) hung on for an 8-7 victory in the opener.

Monmouth Academy graduate Matt Marquis scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh to put UMaine-Farmington up 7-6. Jameson Bloch scored on an error for the Beavers’ final run.

Oxford Hills grad Jonny Pruett hit a two-run double during a four-run third that put the Beavers up 5-0. Marquis also had one of UMF’s nine hits in the opener.

The Beavers scored seven runs in the second inning of the second game to go up by six runs, but the Muskies (4-4) rallied to win 14-9.

Pruett had another double among his two hits, and drove in another run. Marquis and Mt. Blue grad Ike Wrigley also doubled, with Wrigley scoring one run and Marquis crossing the plate twice as UMF’s leadoff hitter.

PSU DUBOIS 5, CMCC 2: A late rally fell short as the Mustangs dropped their spring opener to the defending national champion Lions in DuBois, Pennsylvania.

Garren Post’s two-run home run — which also scored Brandon Gour — finally got Central Maine Community College on the board in the top of the sixth inning in the seven-inning game.

Penn State DuBois plated two runs each in the second and third innings against CMCC starting pitcher Levi Tibbetts. The Lisbon graduate only allowed two hits in three innings, to go along with five strikeouts and four walks. The Lions scored another run in the fourth against reliever Trevor Phelps. The Mt. Abram grad gave up two hits, struck out three and didn’t issue any walks in three innings.

Mt. Blue grad Hayden Durrell singled in the second inning. That was the lone Mustangs hit against Lions pitching until Post’s late homer.

The two teams meet again Thursday at 4 p.m. in DuBois.

UMF’S BLOCH HONORED: Jameson Bloch, a two-way standout for the University of Maine at Farmington, was selected as the North Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week.

The sophomore had a couple of stellar relief performances for the Beavers on Saturday against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

In the first game, he earned his first save by taking over on the mound in the top of the seventh and hold off the Trailblazers in UMF’s first win of the season.

Bloch took the mound with the second game tied 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth, and MCLA runners on base. He walked the bases loaded and then gave up an RBI single that put the Blazers up 8-7. But then he struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

UMF tied the game in the top of the seventh, then Bloch struck out one and held the Trailblazers scoreless in the bottom half of the inning.

After the Beavers regained the lead in the top of the eighth, Bloch retired the side to seal UMF’s second victory.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
BATES DAULERIO NAMED ALL-AMERICA:
Bates College sophomore Elsa Daulerio was selected as an All-America honorable mention by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association on Wednesday.

Daulerio is the ninth player in program history to earn All-America honors from the WBCA, and gives the Bobcats an honorable mention All-American for the second season in a row after Meghan Graff received that accolade last year.

ALL-REGION DUO: Bates College senior captain Morgan Kennedy and Daulerio have been named to the D3hoops.com All-Region 1 First Team.

Kennedy, a guard, led the Bobcats in scoring with an average of 14.4 points per game and 3-point shooting percentage, .372. She shot .441 from the field and .903 from the free-throw line.

Over the past few weeks, Kennedy has been selected to the All-NESCAC First Team and the Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-State First Team.

Daulerio, meanwhile, is a first-team honoree by the NESCAC, the Maine women’s basketball coaches and now D3hoops.com.

The sophomore post ranked second on the Bobcats in scoring (13.6) and rebounding (7.8). She also blocked 64 shots, which ranks 20th in the country.

Bates freshman Sarah Hughes was chosen for the Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-Rookie Team last week.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
BATES RELAY 4TH: Bates College’s distance medley relay placed fourth and earned All-America honors at last week’s NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Sophomore Ross Tejada, junior Truman Williams, junior Calvin Capelle and senior captain Ned Farrington ran the relay in 9 minutes, 51.53 seconds last Friday. They are the first Bates DMR All-Americans since 2015.

Tejada ran the 1,200-meter stretch in 3:02.40, Williams covered 400 meters in 48.98 seconds and Capelle’s time over 800 meters was 1:54.55. The Bobcats were in eighth place when Farrington took over for the mile. Farrington finished the mile strong to move Bates up to fourth place — the second-best DMR finish at the NCAA championships in program history.

“In the last 100 meters, Ned made a big move, a final kick, and passed about three guys to get into fifth,” Bobcats coach Curtis Johnson said in a news release. “The runner for the team that was in fourth, collapsed, and Ned did the rest. It felt like other teams were going backwards at the end, Ned was so fast.”

Farrington finished the mile in 4:05.62, the third fastest of the race.

He is the first Bates men’s athlete to earn All-American honors in indoor track and field and cross country in the same season since Matt Twiest did so in 1997-98.

Central Maine Community College collected 10 hits of its own in the first game, including two apiece from Allee Wellman and Buckfield graduate McKenna Ridlon.

Oxford Hills grads Olivia Gallan and Miah Gallan and Leavitt grad Sam Withee also recorded hits for the Mustangs, who plated three runs in the top of the first before the Lions countered with two in the bottom half and five more in the second.

Winthrop grad Lauryn Wood pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief for CMCC, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out two.

Olivia Gallan paced a quieter Mustangs offense in the second game, with two hits and an RBI. Miah Gallan and Wood each had one of CMCC’s six hits.
