David E. Ellingwood

EUSTIS – David E.
Ellingwood, 91, of Eustis, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2024, at the Hospice House in Auburn with his family by his side.

He was born Feb. 18, 1933, in West Paris to Irwin W. and Lila G. (Proctor) Ellingwood being one of three children.

He graduated from West Paris High School and served in the US Air Force between 1952 – 1956. He was a combat veteran having served in the Korean War and was later stationed at Loring AFB in Limestone, Maine.

On Sept. 23, 1956, he married Gwendolyn Stellhorn and they settled in West Paris to raise their family.

Dad was a logger all his life and loved the woods. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and shared this love with his children and grandchildren at every chance. He was always bringing home orphaned animals and we grew up with a pair of owls and a raccoon who was sure he was a little human in a fur coat. He loved all his dogs, especially Annie.

After retiring, Dad and Mom split their time between Eustis and Florida. Dad loved his camp in Eustis and it was there that he felt most at home. He loved his chipmunks, named them all and made sure that they always had an ample supply of peanuts, corn and sunflower seeds. After his wife passed in 2023, Dad was a guest in each of his daughters homes often regaling us with stories leaving us with lots of memories to remember him by.

Dad was predeceased by his parents, his wife Gwen and his sisters, Francis and Marion.

Dad leaves behind his children Pamela (Donald) Morgan, Lynda (James) Turcotte, and Michael (Sarah) Ellingwood; grandchildren Erik (Alyson) Poland, Daniel (Erin) Morgan, Kyle Ellingwood and Tyler Ellingwood; a special niece Nancy Trudeau; and one very special great granddaughter, Mackenzie who he called little girl. She kept him laughing and smiling with all of her videos and many adventures.

Per Dad’s request, there will be no service.

Thank you to all the staff at the Hospice House in Auburn and Stephens Memorial Hospital for all the help, compassion and kindness that was extended to him and us
