PHILLIPS — The Phillips Area Community Center (PACC) will host a Total Sun Eclipse Event on Monday, April 8, starting at 11 a.m. One of the main activities will be the drawing of the winner of the Eclipse Quilt Raffle at 1 pm. One does not have to be present to win. Tickets are on sale now for $1 each or six for $5. Contact any member of PACC to get yours. Winona Davenport is the “go to” person for more information about this event.

Crafted by Nelda Warkentin of Phillips, the Turning Point Quilt is on view now at Dark Star Fabric, Main Street, Phillips. Made from several layers of acrylic painted silk, the quilt has been “machine-pieced”. It has quilt batting and a canvas backing and has been signed by the artist. It is “looped” on the back for hanging either horizontally or vertically.

At the time of its creation in 2004, this unique piece of art was valued at $1,700. It has been displayed around the country, including museums in Alaska, Arizona, Philadelphia, and Vermont. The artist decided last year to donate the quilt to PACC. Money raised by the sale of raffle tickets is earmarked for hot topping the “apron” in front of the main entrance to the building.

Other activities on the day of the eclipse begin at 11:00 am and include a potluck lunch at noon. Guests are not required to bring a dish to share. Those who choose to do so should contact Winona Davenport, 639-4296. “Easy listening”, music during lunch will be provided by Gary and Lois Hall of Wilton.

The total eclipse begins at 2:22 pm. The sun will be totally darkened at 3:31 pm and will end at 4:33. Even if not attending activities at PACC, parents wishing to purchase children’s safety “glasses” for viewing may do so for $3/pair and must sign a release form. Viewing glasses are recommended by NASA. “Glasses” for adults are also available.

There is also a “surprise project” in the works for younger viewers, including a special photo op. More details will be available as the date approaches.

Underwriters of this and other PACC projects are Mike Soboleski; Tom Saviello, EPCS, LLC; Bear Belly’s Tap and Table, Rangeley Road, Phillips; Eastman Park; Mike and Ginny Auger; Dark Star Fabric; Central Maine Crane; Pike Industries, Inc.
