TUCSON, Ariz. — Wesleyan came out on top in a high-scoring matchup of NESCAC baseball teams in Arizona, beating Bates College 22-11 in the Tucson Invitational on Tuesday.

The Cardinals (9-1) scored four runs in the first inning, one of four four-run frames they produced in the contest. Their third four-run inning, in the top of the sixth, put them up 14-2.

The Bobcats (7-4), though, got back in the game in the bottom half of the sixth, when a grand slam by catcher Brandon Biggane capped a nine-run inning and cut Wesleyan’s lead to 14-11.

The Cardinals, though, pulled away, again, by plating four more runs in the seventh and two apiece in the eighth and ninth innings.

Biggane’s home run is his fourth of the season. Noah Jankowski and Keagan Ryan also hit homers for Bates.

The Bobcats continue their Arizona road trip Thursday when they face Carleton, which they defeated 7-1 on Monday. Then they meet University of Redlands on Friday.

BOBCATS TAMED TWICE: Bates College spotted its foes early leads and never recovered, falling 10-2 in six innings to Elmhurst University and then dropping a 9-2 contest to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Clermont, Florida.

The Bobcats fall to 2-4 on the season. They continue their season-opening Florida trip with two games Thursday and wrap it up with two more on Friday.

In Bates’ first game Tuesday, the Bluejays plated four runs in the first inning. They added two in the fourth and ended the game early with a four-run bottom of the sixth inning.

Kennedy Jones had two of the Bobcats’ four hits. She also stole a base. Zariya Anderson and Sienna Pietrasiewicz each singled and scored a run.

The Pointers (11-2) scored three runs on four hits in the top half of the first in the second game.

The Bobcats countered with a run in the bottom half of the first, as pitcher Delaney Rankin singled home shortstop Ella Maher.

But Wisconsin-Stevens Point broke away with a four-run third, then added to its lead with a run in the fourth and another in the sixth.

Rankin also drove in Bates’ second run, singling in Mattea Baumgardner in the bottom of the sixth.

The Bobcats were again limited to four hits, which included an Isabel Bettencourt double and a single by Jones.

Rankin (1-2) pitched all seven innings, striking out six and allowing 15 hits.
