CASTINE — TJ Underhill’s hat trick helped lead Bates College to a 16-8 non-conference men’s lacrosse victory Wednesday.

Connor Hartman, Alex Horowitz, and Luke Breen potted two goals apiece for the Bobcats (3-4). Riley McClure, Jake Johnson, Drew McClutchy, Kevin Burke, Javi Werner, Wil Masterson, and Denzel Evans also scored in the win.

Jacob Hintermaier and Alex Stevens led the Mariners (3-2) with two goals each. Lewiston’s Jayden Wilson notched a goal, along with Trey Marcil, Sam Nichol and Riley Morin. Gray-New Gloucester graduate Zeb Dufresne had a tallied one ground ball and two caused turnovers on defense for MMA.

Andrew Toland stopped seven shots in the win and Garrett Ruszkowski stopped 16 shots in the loss.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

BATES 23, PLYMOUTH ST. 15: Caroline Taggart paced the Bobcats (3-4) with five goals and three assists in the win over the Panthers (3-3 in Plymouth, New Hampshire.

Saidie O’Neil finished with four goals while Laci Raveis and Hanna Matthews each had hat tricks. Emma Austin notched a pair, with Lucy Taylor, Caroline Keating and Julia Roelofs tallying a goal each.

Avery Lehman made nine saves in the win and Abigail Ziehl also saw action in net for Bates.

Julia Donovan and Tarryn O’Brien scored four times apiece for Plymouth State. Maddie Hunt and Morgan Cunningham scored twice. Ellie Mosher, Amelia Thomas and Jenna Stowell also found the back of the net.

Margie Black stopped eight shots.

USM 19, UMF 4: Rachel Shanks scored eight times for the Huskies (2-2) in the win against the Beavers (2-3) in Gorham.

Paige Rinaldi scored four times in the win while Elaina Hanselmann had a hat trick. Anna Byers scored twice and Raegan Bechard and Molly Black each had a goal.

Kiaya Gatchell had a game-high four assists for USM.

Lewiston’s Ceca Racine made 11 saves in the win.

Oxford Hills grad Ashlee Farrar had three goals for UMF and Ruby McMinis also scored.

Kate Nowell and Skye Cotnoir combined to make 13 saves in the loss.

SWIMMING & DIVING

BOBCATS OPEN NATIONALS: Maximillian Cory led Bates on the first day of the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving National Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina.

He finished 10th overall and was runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle consolation final with a time of 20.18 seconds. He entered the championships with the top seed time of 19.66.

Mark Gregory swam in the 500-yard freestyle preliminary rounds and came in 18th (4:29.57), finishing two spots out of making the consolation final.

Sophia Tropper swam in the 500-yard freestyle on the women’s side and ended in 44th in the prelims with a time of 5:10.04.

After a time of 2:04.79 in the prelims, Natalie Young qualified for the 200 individual medley consolation final, where she finished eighth (16th overall) with a time of 2:05.97.

Grace Wenger didn’t qualify for the 50-yard freestyle finals after finishing 43rd in the prelims (23.98).

The men’s 200 medley relay team of Timothy Johnson, Marich Somridhivej, John Weigel and Nathaniel Pierce finished 21st in the prelims, with a time of 1:30.36.

The women’s 2oo medley relay finished 16th overall and eighth in the consolation final with a time of 1:44.56. Team members were Sophie Cassily, Emily Kalvaitis, Sarah Palmer and Majorie McLeod.
