Influenced by melodious words, such as Nezinscot and Androscoggin as a child, Turner native Jacqueline Briggs Martin has gone on to win the literary equivalent of an Oscar.

“I was very surprised,” said Martin, the winner of the 1999 Caldecott Award for her children’s book of “Snowflake Bentley.”

She will make a special appearance at the Turner Public Library at 10 am Saturday to sign copies of her book and to talk about writing.

Martin, who was named the Caldecott winner on February 1 has written several books. They include the Bizzy Bones series, “Button, Bucket, Sky,” and Good Times on Grandfather’s Mountain.”

Many of the books are filled with the traditions of Maine, including stonewalls, quilts, and green forests. The author lives in Iowa, but returns to Maine frequently to visit her extended Turner family.

“Almost all of my books have apple trees or apple orchards in them,” Martin says with a laugh. “I think they are embedded in my subconscious from riding the school bus by Prince’s Orchard every day.”

The material used in Looking Back is produced exactly as it originally appeared although misspellings and errors may be corrected.
